The Receding Snow

The snow has just receded from the little patch of catnip I planted in 2006 for my three cats to party in. This morning I moved the fallen leaves and sticks underneath the dried stalks and actually picked a few fresh green leaves, and this in March zone 4b! Spring is coming, though probably not before another snowfall or two. For me, however, Spring is now fully ensconced in my heart, while my gardening fingers are itching. I already tried weeding, note to self: dig the dandelion’s root out in the spring once the ground has actually thawed.

  1. Wasn't that recent warm weather so welcome after what seemed like another too long of a winter? It has gotten cool again though. I guess we'll have to ride out this cold snap for just another day or so. Dreamer.

I'm looking forward to planting the Baby Orchard variety of corn that I just received from Prairie Garden Seeds of Humboldt, Saskatchewan. Too bad I'll have to wait another six to eight weeks to do that. I really enjoy growing tall varieties of vegetables and flowers although here in Northern Ontario I've had more luck with the earlier 'dwarfier' varieties like Tiny Tim tomatoes and bush beans. Last year's corn didn't get a chance to fully mature. I tried the multi-coloured Indian corn as part of my "Three Sisters" project (corn, climbing beans and squash) with mixed success although it was absolutely amazing to see how tall the corn got. Better weather - more sun, less rain - would've helped. It was however my first attempt at growing corn and I do have a better plan for growing it this year. Best of all, if this early thaw is any indication of what we can expect for weather this summer, it should be a great gardening year.

    Cya later, Orest
